There are many plans for tourist (especially foreigners) to experience old Japanese culture.  It's a little bit expensive but it must be something pleasant to look back on.

The most popular experience is Maiko experience plan.

Try on maiko(geisha's apprentice) costume, very beautiful kimono and wig, and have put on maiko make up.
you can have taken some pictures and walking around street. My friend from England did it before and showed her pic to her mother.... Her mother couldn't find her daughter on the photo. She became a complete Japanese woman.

Yes there is a plan for gentleman!
It's samurai experience. It's similar to Maiko experience.

It cost about 10000yen to 20000yen. It depends on course.

Syakyou is very solemnity plan.  Syakyou is copying sutras with a hair pencil. It sounds difficult to write. But there is a copy of sutra under the paper and you just trace it.
Even if you don't understand what the sutra says, you just concentrate on writing with your spirit on each caracter is supposed to impress the Buddist teaching on your heart.

I think.....it harder to sit down Japanese style with the buttocks on top of the ankle. It's called SSeiza.

It's not expensive. It just cost around 2000yen. (depends on the temples and plans)

The second solemnity plan must be zen.
Zen has recently become popular in Europe. It's not a matter of faith but of discipline.
You can't obtain something but you can get rid of something the "self" that has formed out of your life experiences. It's a way to achieve tranquility of your mind.

It's also not expensive.

After zen experience, why don't you go around wit rickshaw?

A passenger cart pulled by a person who has powerful muscles and nice smile. Meiji era, palanquins were the major means of conveyance until the invention of the rickshaw, which was faster than a palanquin and cheaper than a horse. The person who pulls your rickshaws is guide the town. You will surprise they run so faster than you think.

The price depends on the distance and plans.

Why don't you ask the ricshaw drive to take to Wagashi(Japanese sweets) shop which has plans to make it by yourself.

Making Japanese sweets is a little bit difficult. If you are dexterous, you should try.
Of course you can eat after making with bitter Maccha.

There are other amazing experience plans for tourist.
I'm gonna let you know soon.
